TPD and Income Protection address different parts of disability risk. TPD usually pays a lump sum if an illness or injury meets the insurer's total and permanent disability definition. Income Protection usually pays a monthly benefit if you meet the policy's disability test, after its waiting period and while you remain eligible within the selected benefit period. The definitions and payment rules vary by policy, so one type of cover does not automatically replace the other. \[[1](https://moneysmart.gov.au/how-life-insurance-works/income-protection-insurance), [2](https://moneysmart.gov.au/how-life-insurance-works/total-and-permanent-disability-tpd-insurance)\]

If you are comparing both, look at the TPD definition alongside the Income Protection waiting period, benefit period and benefit calculation. You can [compare available TPD and Income Protection options](https://www.jicinsurance.com.au/quote-tool).

| When payment may start | The insurer assesses the claim against the definition and evidence required by the policy. | Payments generally start after the waiting period if you meet the terms at that time. \[[1](https://moneysmart.gov.au/how-life-insurance-works/income-protection-insurance)\] |
| How long it may pay | A lump sum is generally paid once, if the claim is accepted. | The benefit period sets the maximum payment period. Options commonly include two years, five years or to a specified age such as 65. \[[1](https://moneysmart.gov.au/how-life-insurance-works/income-protection-insurance)\] |
| Gap to check | A person may be unable to work before their condition meets the relevant permanent-disability definition. | A partial income benefit or a finite benefit period may leave a shortfall against household and additional care costs. |

## What TPD insurance is designed to do

TPD insurance is generally designed to pay a lump sum when illness or injury leaves someone totally and permanently disabled under the policy wording. Insurers use different definitions, including own occupation, any occupation and activities of daily living. The wording can change what evidence is needed and how a claim is assessed, so the label 'TPD' alone does not tell you the full claim test. \[[2](https://moneysmart.gov.au/how-life-insurance-works/total-and-permanent-disability-tpd-insurance)\]

A lump sum may help with one-off or longer-term costs such as reducing debt, modifying a home or vehicle, medical and rehabilitation expenses, or supporting living costs. It is not automatically a monthly wage replacement for a set number of years. The cover amount, definition and ownership structure all matter. \[[2](https://moneysmart.gov.au/how-life-insurance-works/total-and-permanent-disability-tpd-insurance)\]

For a closer look at occupation definitions, read [how own occupation and any occupation TPD differ](https://www.jicinsurance.com.au/jic-insurance-blog/own-occupation-vs-any-occupation-tpd-understanding-the-difference).

## What Income Protection is designed to do

Income Protection is generally designed to pay part of lost income if illness or injury prevents you from working and the policy's claim requirements are met. It is usually paid monthly after a waiting period. The benefit period is the maximum time payments can continue for an eligible claim; it is not a promise that every claim will be paid for that whole period. \[[1](https://moneysmart.gov.au/how-life-insurance-works/income-protection-insurance)\]

The monthly amount is not necessarily the same as your usual take-home pay. MoneySmart gives 75% and 90% as examples of pre-tax income replacement, and each policy has its own calculation and claim conditions. Payments under an Income Protection policy must also be included in your tax return. \[[1](https://moneysmart.gov.au/how-life-insurance-works/income-protection-insurance)\]

For the difference between the period before payments can start and the maximum period they can continue, see [Income Protection waiting periods](https://www.jicinsurance.com.au/jic-insurance-blog/income-protection-waiting-periods-30-60-90-days) and [Income Protection benefit periods](https://www.jicinsurance.com.au/jic-insurance-blog/income-protection-benefit-periods).

## Where a gap can appear between the two

The overlap matters because a person can be unable to work without yet satisfying a TPD definition. A TPD sum may look large when compared with annual income, but it is only payable if the claim meets the policy wording. In the meantime, an Income Protection policy may have a waiting period, a modest monthly benefit or a limited benefit period.

### The early period before a TPD claim meets its definition

Consider someone who stops work after a serious illness or injury. Their capacity to work may be uncertain while treatment and recovery are underway. If they meet the Income Protection definition, a monthly benefit may be payable after the waiting period. The same facts do not automatically satisfy the TPD definition, which is based on the specific policy wording and claim evidence.

This is the near-term risk Alex often sees overlooked: a large TPD amount can be counted as though it replaces income immediately, even though the person may not yet meet the permanent-disability test. If the Income Protection cover is too low, or there is no suitable IP benefit, the household may have a cash-flow gap.

### When a two-year Income Protection benefit period ends

A two-year benefit period is one common Income Protection option. It describes the maximum period payments may continue for an eligible claim; it is not a two-year waiting period. If someone remains unable to work after the benefit period ends, Income Protection payments may stop at that limit. A TPD claim is assessed separately, and there is no automatic transfer from an IP claim to a TPD payment. \[[1](https://moneysmart.gov.au/how-life-insurance-works/income-protection-insurance)\]

That is why the phrase "the first two years" needs care. Two years can describe an IP benefit limit, but it is not a universal TPD waiting rule or a date when TPD automatically becomes payable. [Read more about two-year, five-year and age-based Income Protection periods](https://www.jicinsurance.com.au/jic-insurance-blog/income-protection-benefit-periods).

### When an Income Protection benefit still does not cover every cost

Income Protection usually replaces only part of eligible earnings. A household may still need to pay its regular bills while also facing extra medical, rehabilitation or care costs. The monthly benefit may help with those expenses, but it is not a promise that every cost will be reimbursed. MoneySmart recommends comparing the benefit with a household budget and other available resources. \[[1](https://moneysmart.gov.au/how-life-insurance-works/income-protection-insurance), [2](https://moneysmart.gov.au/how-life-insurance-works/total-and-permanent-disability-tpd-insurance)\]

For new individual disability income insurance (IDII) policies issued by life companies, APRA's measure expects benefits under the IDII product not to exceed 90% of earnings for the first six months of a claim and 70% thereafter. This is a measure for new IDII policies, not a universal payout formula for every Income Protection contract. It is also expressed against earnings, not a promise that a claimant will receive the same percentage of their usual take-home pay. \[[3](https://www.apra.gov.au/news-and-publications/final-individual-disability-income-insurance-sustainability-measures)\]

## A founder note from Alex Jorgensen

In my experience, the biggest problem is distinguishing where TPD and Income Protection overlap, and the risk runs in both directions. Some people build a large TPD policy and count on it to replace income, but underestimate the earlier period when they may be unable to work without yet meeting the TPD definition. They may also have too little Income Protection to help fill that gap. The reverse assumption can also cause trouble: someone may expect a large Income Protection policy to cover them fully, but the benefit usually replaces only a portion of eligible income. For households with limited savings, that may be difficult to manage alongside medical or carer-related costs. I think about the timeline, the definitions, the benefit limits and the extra costs together.

## Can you claim on both TPD and Income Protection

It may be possible for the same illness or injury to be considered under both types of cover, because each policy has its own definition and claim requirements. But an accepted TPD claim does not automatically mean an Income Protection claim will be accepted, or vice versa. The policies may also have different benefit calculations, offsets or ownership and superannuation rules. Check the current Product Disclosure Statements and confirm how the specific policies interact with the insurer or an authorised representative before relying on both benefits.

If cover is held through super, also check the fund policy wording and any relevant access requirements. A headline cover amount does not explain all claim conditions or how a benefit may be paid.

## What to compare when reviewing TPD and Income Protection together

A useful comparison looks beyond the headline sum insured or monthly amount. Check the wording and timing across both policies:

- The TPD definition, including whether it is based on own occupation, any occupation or activities of daily living, and how the policy is owned.
- The Income Protection disability definition, waiting period, monthly benefit formula, benefit period and any offsets or exclusions.
- How long existing savings, paid leave or other support could cover the waiting period and any shortfall in monthly income.
- Whether an Income Protection benefit period is two years, five years or to a specified age, and what happens if a claim continues to that limit.
- How existing cover through super fits with any policy held outside super, including differences in definitions and conditions.
- Whether the household budget allows for additional medical, rehabilitation or carer-related costs as well as normal expenses.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does TPD insurance replace Income Protection

No. TPD is generally a lump-sum benefit if the claim meets the policy definition. Income Protection is generally a monthly benefit for an eligible period after the waiting period. They address different financial risks and are assessed under separate policy terms. \[[1](https://moneysmart.gov.au/how-life-insurance-works/income-protection-insurance), [2](https://moneysmart.gov.au/how-life-insurance-works/total-and-permanent-disability-tpd-insurance)\]

### Does a two-year Income Protection benefit period mean TPD starts after two years

No. Two years is a common maximum benefit period option for Income Protection, not a universal TPD waiting period. TPD is assessed against the definition and evidence in that policy; an IP benefit ending does not automatically make someone eligible for TPD. \[[1](https://moneysmart.gov.au/how-life-insurance-works/income-protection-insurance), [2](https://moneysmart.gov.au/how-life-insurance-works/total-and-permanent-disability-tpd-insurance)\]

### Is 70% of income the standard Income Protection payment

No single percentage applies to every policy. MoneySmart gives 75% and 90% as examples of pre-tax income replacement. APRA's 90% for the first six months and 70% thereafter measure applies to new IDII policies issued by life companies. A policy's formula, other benefits, tax and personal income can affect what a claimant actually receives. \[[1](https://moneysmart.gov.au/how-life-insurance-works/income-protection-insurance), [3](https://www.apra.gov.au/news-and-publications/final-individual-disability-income-insurance-sustainability-measures)\]

### Can Income Protection cover medical or carer costs

An Income Protection benefit is generally designed to replace part of income, rather than reimburse every medical or care expense. The payment may help with household costs, but the amount may not cover all regular expenses and new costs. TPD may pay a lump sum for eligible claims that can help with medical, rehabilitation or accessibility costs, depending on the policy. \[[1](https://moneysmart.gov.au/how-life-insurance-works/income-protection-insurance), [2](https://moneysmart.gov.au/how-life-insurance-works/total-and-permanent-disability-tpd-insurance)\]

## Compare the timeline as well as the cover amount

When you compare TPD vs Income Protection Insurance, look at when each benefit may respond, what definition applies, how much an eligible claim may pay and how long payments can continue. A large TPD sum and a high monthly IP benefit can still leave a gap if the timing, policy limits or household costs have not been considered.
