Yes. Self-employed Australians can apply for Income Protection if they meet the insurer's eligibility rules. The key detail is how the policy defines your income and the period it uses to assess it. Business turnover is not automatically your personal insured income, and a monthly benefit shown on a policy schedule may be limited by the income calculation that applies at claim. \[[1](https://moneysmart.gov.au/how-life-insurance-works/income-protection-insurance), [2](https://www.tal.com.au/-/media/tal/files/pds/accelerated-protection-combined-pds.pdf), [3](https://www.suncorp.com.au/content/dam/suncorp/insurance/suncorp-insurance/documents/life-and-income/income-protection/suncorp-income-protection-insurance-pds.pdf)\]

If you want to see the cover available through JIC Insurance, you can [compare Income Protection options](https://www.jicinsurance.com.au/income-protection-insurance-quotes).

## A note from Alex

In my experience, one of the most important Income Protection details for a self-employed person is how the policy defines pre-claim income. Some wordings may assess the highest 12 months within a three-year window, while others use a more recent period; when income fluctuates, those approaches can produce different earnings figures for a claim.

The "highest 12 months in three years" example is not universally available for a new application. Check the specific PDS and current product availability before relying on any example in this article.

## What does "indemnity" mean for Income Protection?

In some Income Protection policies, "indemnity" describes a benefit calculation that is checked against the insured person's actual income under the policy definition. The policy schedule may show a monthly benefit, but the amount payable can be lower if the defined earnings calculation does not support that amount, or if another limit or offset applies. \[[2](https://www.tal.com.au/-/media/tal/files/pds/accelerated-protection-combined-pds.pdf), [3](https://www.suncorp.com.au/content/dam/suncorp/insurance/suncorp-insurance/documents/life-and-income/income-protection/suncorp-income-protection-insurance-pds.pdf), [5](https://www.aia.com.au/content/dam/au-wise/en/docs/policy-docs/Priority_Protection_Incorporated_By_Reference_Material.pdf.coredownload.inline.pdf)\]

The word "indemnity" does not, by itself, tell you the whole formula. Look for the policy's definitions of **Earnings**, **Pre-Claim Earnings**, **Pre-disability Income** or **Income replacement amount**. Also check the separate disability definition, waiting period, benefit period and any claim offsets.

The time window matters for self-employed people because income can move from year to year. A policy might use the most recent 12 months, average two completed financial years, or—under some existing cover—a highest 12-month period within a longer look-back. Those calculations can produce different income figures from the same business history.

## How do current policy definitions differ?

The following examples come from current insurer documents checked for this draft. They are examples of specific policy wording, not a survey of every Australian product.

| **Example wording** | **Income period for a self-employed person** | **Important qualification** |
| --- | --- | --- |
| AIA Extended Indemnity \[[4](https://www.aia.com.au/content/dam/au-wise/en/docs/policy-docs/Priority_Protection_Product_Disclosure_Statement.pdf.coredownload.inline.pdf), [5](https://www.aia.com.au/content/dam/au-wise/en/docs/policy-docs/Priority_Protection_Incorporated_By_Reference_Material.pdf.coredownload.inline.pdf)\] | Highest average monthly income in any consecutive 12-month period during the three years before disablement. | The August 2026 material says this cover is only available in limited circumstances when replacing eligible existing AIA cover; it is not available for new business. |
| TAL Accelerated Protection \[[2](https://www.tal.com.au/-/media/tal/files/pds/accelerated-protection-combined-pds.pdf)\] | Average Earnings over the last two financial years that ended before the waiting period. | The PDS definition for self-employed people differs from its 12-month definition for employees. |
| Suncorp Income Protection \[[3](https://www.suncorp.com.au/content/dam/suncorp/insurance/suncorp-insurance/documents/life-and-income/income-protection/suncorp-income-protection-insurance-pds.pdf)\] | Before-tax average monthly earnings in the 12 months before sickness or injury; business expenses are excluded for self-employed people. | The claim calculation remains subject to the policy definition of earnings, the insured amount and other terms. |

These examples show why the label alone is not enough. The time period, the income counted, the date that starts the look-back and the product's availability all matter. Always check the PDS and policy schedule that apply to the specific cover being considered.

## How can the assessment window change the income figure?

Consider a self-employed consultant whose business income has fluctuated. For illustration, assume the policy-recognised income works out to $126,000 for the highest consecutive 12 months in a three-year look-back, $78,000 for the most recent 12 months, and an average of $102,000 across the last two completed financial years.

| **Illustrative calculation** | **Income figure used as the starting point** |
| --- | --- |
| Highest 12 consecutive months within three years | $126,000 |
| Most recent 12 months | $78,000 |
| Average of the last two completed financial years | $102,000 |

The figures are deliberately simplified: they assume the income is recognised under the relevant policy wording and that the periods line up with the example. They are not benefit quotes. A payable benefit may also depend on the insured monthly amount, income-replacement limits, offsets, the reason for the income change and the rest of the policy terms.

This is the practical point Alex sees self-employed people miss: an income measure using a stronger period may produce a different starting figure from one using only a recent low-income year. The "best 12 months in three years" example appears in the AIA material above only for eligible replacement cover, so it should not be assumed to be an option for a new applicant. \[[4](https://www.aia.com.au/content/dam/au-wise/en/docs/policy-docs/Priority_Protection_Product_Disclosure_Statement.pdf.coredownload.inline.pdf), [5](https://www.aia.com.au/content/dam/au-wise/en/docs/policy-docs/Priority_Protection_Incorporated_By_Reference_Material.pdf.coredownload.inline.pdf)\]

## Does the insurer assess turnover, profit or salary?

It depends on how your business is structured and on the policy wording. Turnover is the money a business receives before its operating costs. It is not automatically the same as the income attributable to the person insured.

For example, TAL's current PDS defines Earnings for a self-employed person by reference to their share of the business's net profits or losses, with an adjustment for expenses that were not necessarily incurred or normally required in the usual conduct of the business. Suncorp says business expenses are excluded from a self-employed person's before-tax earnings when calculating personal income. \[[2](https://www.tal.com.au/-/media/tal/files/pds/accelerated-protection-combined-pds.pdf), [3](https://www.suncorp.com.au/content/dam/suncorp/insurance/suncorp-insurance/documents/life-and-income/income-protection/suncorp-income-protection-insurance-pds.pdf)\]

Salary, drawings, dividends, partnership income and trust distributions may be treated differently under different contracts. Do not assume that the amount transferred from a business account to your personal account is the income figure an insurer will use. Check the definition and ask which evidence it will rely on.

## Is the income test the same when you apply and when you claim?

Not necessarily. At application, an insurer may assess the amount of cover being requested and ask for evidence of earnings. At claim, the policy wording sets the relevant income period and the evidence needed to calculate the benefit. TAL says a claimant must provide proof of Pre-Claim Earnings and that a benefit may be reduced if those earnings do not justify the insured monthly amount. \[[2](https://www.tal.com.au/-/media/tal/files/pds/accelerated-protection-combined-pds.pdf)\]

This means a policy schedule should not be read as a promise that the full amount shown will be paid for every accepted claim. If business income falls after cover starts, the claim-time calculation may matter. Income Protection also responds to a covered illness or injury that affects work under the policy; a trading downturn by itself is not an illness or injury claim. \[[1](https://moneysmart.gov.au/how-life-insurance-works/income-protection-insurance), [2](https://www.tal.com.au/-/media/tal/files/pds/accelerated-protection-combined-pds.pdf)\]

## What records might an insurer ask a self-employed claimant to provide?

The exact evidence depends on the insurer, the policy and the claim. Records that may be relevant include:

- Personal and business tax returns, with Notices of Assessment.
- Business financial statements and profit-and-loss reports.
- Records showing business income, expenses and the insured person's share of profits or losses.
- Accountant-prepared records or other documents that explain how the business pays the insured person.

For example, Suncorp's PDS says it may request verification of earnings, business income and expenses, and may require tax returns or profit-and-loss statements. Ask the insurer or authorised representative which documents are relevant to the wording being considered. \[[3](https://www.suncorp.com.au/content/dam/suncorp/insurance/suncorp-insurance/documents/life-and-income/income-protection/suncorp-income-protection-insurance-pds.pdf)\]

## Questions to ask before comparing Income Protection

For a self-employed applicant, useful questions include:

- What does this policy count as my Earnings: salary, business profit, my share of profit, or another measure?
- What exact period is used to assess Pre-Claim Earnings, and what date starts that period?
- Does the policy use a recent 12 months, completed financial years, or another look-back?
- How does the definition work if I operate through a company, partnership or trust, or if I recently changed my business structure?
- Which financial documents may be needed at application and at claim?
- If the income calculated at claim is below the amount insured, how does that affect the monthly benefit?

It can also help to compare how the benefit period and waiting period fit alongside the income definition. Read [how Income Protection works](https://www.jicinsurance.com.au/jic-insurance-blog/how-does-income-protection-insurance-work-in-australia), [waiting periods](https://www.jicinsurance.com.au/jic-insurance-blog/income-protection-waiting-periods-30-60-90-days) and [benefit periods](https://www.jicinsurance.com.au/jic-insurance-blog/income-protection-benefit-periods) for those separate features.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I get Income Protection if I am self-employed?

Yes, many policies allow self-employed people to apply, subject to eligibility rules such as occupation, work hours, income and underwriting. Check the current PDS and application requirements for the specific policy. \[[1](https://moneysmart.gov.au/how-life-insurance-works/income-protection-insurance), [2](https://www.tal.com.au/-/media/tal/files/pds/accelerated-protection-combined-pds.pdf), [3](https://www.suncorp.com.au/content/dam/suncorp/insurance/suncorp-insurance/documents/life-and-income/income-protection/suncorp-income-protection-insurance-pds.pdf)\]

### Will an insurer use my business turnover as my income?

Not automatically. Policies define which earnings count, and may deduct or exclude business expenses or assess the insured person's share of business profits. Turnover, business profit and personal income are different measures. \[[2](https://www.tal.com.au/-/media/tal/files/pds/accelerated-protection-combined-pds.pdf), [3](https://www.suncorp.com.au/content/dam/suncorp/insurance/suncorp-insurance/documents/life-and-income/income-protection/suncorp-income-protection-insurance-pds.pdf)\]

### Does a "best 12 months in three years" definition mean I can choose it for a new policy?

No. Availability depends on the product and the policy terms. AIA's August 2026 reference material retains this calculation for Extended Indemnity cover in limited eligible replacement situations, and says the cover is not available for new business. Other policies use different periods. \[[4](https://www.aia.com.au/content/dam/au-wise/en/docs/policy-docs/Priority_Protection_Product_Disclosure_Statement.pdf.coredownload.inline.pdf), [5](https://www.aia.com.au/content/dam/au-wise/en/docs/policy-docs/Priority_Protection_Incorporated_By_Reference_Material.pdf.coredownload.inline.pdf)\]

### Will Income Protection pay the full amount shown on my policy schedule?

Not necessarily. The amount payable may be limited by the income calculation, the policy's benefit formula, offsets, the insured monthly amount and other claim conditions. Review the PDS and policy schedule together. \[[2](https://www.tal.com.au/-/media/tal/files/pds/accelerated-protection-combined-pds.pdf), [3](https://www.suncorp.com.au/content/dam/suncorp/insurance/suncorp-insurance/documents/life-and-income/income-protection/suncorp-income-protection-insurance-pds.pdf)\]

### What if my self-employed income changes from year to year?

The effect depends on the policy's earnings definition and look-back period. A recent-year method may treat a low-income period differently from a definition that averages multiple years or uses a highest period. The actual claim calculation depends on the policy wording and evidence.

### What financial evidence should I prepare?

There is no single document list for every insurer. Tax returns, Notices of Assessment, business financial statements and profit-and-loss reports may be requested. Confirm the requirements for the product and your business structure before applying or claiming. \[[3](https://www.suncorp.com.au/content/dam/suncorp/insurance/suncorp-insurance/documents/life-and-income/income-protection/suncorp-income-protection-insurance-pds.pdf)\]

## Compare the income definition, not just the monthly amount

For self-employed Australians, Income Protection comparisons should include the definition of earnings and the period used to assess them. A highest-period calculation, a recent 12-month measure and an average of completed financial years can treat fluctuating income differently. The policy's disability test, benefit limits, waiting period, offsets and availability rules also matter.
